Information

WEST System 209 Extra Slow Hardener is a specialized hardener formulated for use with WEST System 105 Epoxy Resin. Designed to provide the longest working time and extended cure time, 209 Extra Slow Hardener is ideal for projects in high ambient temperatures or when extended assembly and working time is needed. This hardener is particularly beneficial for large or complex bonding, laminating, and coating tasks, ensuring a thorough cure and strong bond even in challenging conditions.

Key Features:

  • Extended Working Time: Provides an exceptionally long pot life and working time, making it ideal for large, complex, or intricate projects where precision is key.
  • High-Temperature Performance: Formulated for use in warm and hot conditions, allowing for proper application and curing even in elevated temperatures.
  • Consistent Curing: Ensures a consistent, thorough cure that delivers strong, durable bonds and coatings, minimizing the risk of incomplete curing.
  • Versatile Applications: Suitable for a wide range of marine and structural applications, including laminating, bonding, and coating.
  • Clear Finish: Cures to a clear, amber-colored solid that can be easily sanded, painted, or varnished for a professional finish.

Technical Specifications:

  • Mix Ratio: 3 parts 105 Resin to 1 part 209 Hardener by volume
  • Pot Life: 40-50 minutes at 72°F (22°C) for a 100g mixture
  • Cure Time: Initial cure to a solid state in 20-24 hours; full cure in 4-9 days, depending on temperature and humidity
  • Color: Clear, amber
  • Viscosity: Low to moderate (300-350 cP mixed viscosity at 72°F / 22°C)
  • Minimum Application Temperature: 70°F (21°C)

Application Instructions:

  1. Surface Preparation: Ensure all surfaces to be bonded or coated are clean, dry, and free of contaminants. Sand smooth surfaces to improve mechanical adhesion.
  2. Mixing: Measure 3 parts 105 Resin to 1 part 209 Hardener by volume. Mix thoroughly for at least 2 minutes until the blend is uniform and free of streaks.
  3. Application: Apply the mixed epoxy to the prepared surfaces using a brush, roller, or spreader. Due to the extended pot life, you have more time to position and adjust parts.
  4. Clamping and Curing: Secure the parts in position with clamps or weights. Avoid excessive clamping pressure that could squeeze out the adhesive. Allow the epoxy to cure undisturbed.
  5. Finishing: Once cured, the epoxy can be sanded, painted, or varnished to achieve the desired finish.

Safety Precautions:

  • Always wear protective gloves, eyewear, and clothing when handling epoxy hardeners and resins.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes.
  • Avoid contact with skin and eyes. In case of contact, wash thoroughly with soap and water and seek medical attention if necessary.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture.

Benefits:

  • Maximized Working Time: Provides ample working time for precise, intricate work, reducing stress and improving the quality of complex projects.
  • Optimal for Warm Climates: Ensures reliable curing and bonding in high-temperature environments, making it ideal for summer projects or hot climates.
  • High-Quality Finish: Cures to a clear, smooth finish that can be easily sanded and finished to achieve a professional look.
  • Reliable Performance: Delivers consistent, high-strength bonds and coatings, ensuring long-lasting durability and performance.

WEST System 209 Extra Slow Hardener (333ml) is the perfect choice for demanding projects that require extended working time and reliable curing in warm conditions. Trust in WEST System’s proven performance and quality to achieve exceptional results in your marine and structural applications.
